The usual Ennis humour and social commentary is present (“The feeders went and messed up this world, guess they had to go.”) and the three friends and their journey of discovery is enjoyable.Īn original take on the apocalypse and one for fans of Ennis and the genre. Having fled the death and destruction of the city, Rover, Red, and Charlie find that feeders aren't the only ones you can't trust in this topsy-turvy world. Yet despite being set in the same world, Rover Red Charlie is quite light and fun exactly what you would expect from the dog’s take on the apocalypse. Three canine best friends try to make their way at the end of the world. When I read Crossed three years ago I presented a one word review: “Disturbing.” It was quite possibly the most graphic depiction and the most depraved apocalypse I’ve ever read. In Rover Red Charlie, Garth Ennis has journeyed back to his apocalyptic world of Crossed to ask the question, “What about the dogs?” How will they cope without their “feeders”, will they still be able to bark “I’m a dog”, and are they the ones who will inherit the planet once we’re all gone? But in both these scenarios, no-one thinks about the dogs. In real life post-apocalypse waits a few million years for the next species to come along and dig up the fossils and fail to learn from history. Whenever the apocalypse happens in fiction there is always a plucky band of survivors trying to make it in the post-apocalyptic world. Poe never lived to see ‘Annabel Lee’ published: it appeared posthumously in the Southern Literary Messenger in November 1849. This keeps the metre of the poem on its toes (we might say it keeps the poem’s ‘feet’ on its toes), and reflects the sudden death of Annabel Lee as well as the ballad-like feel Poe is seeking to create, harking back to medieval ballads about true love and kingdoms by the sea. one unstressed syllable followed by a stressed). two unstressed syllables followed by a stressed) as opposed to iambs (i.e. Instead, the form of ‘Annabel Lee’ is actually a little more irregular: the poem begins with a stanza of alternating tetrameter and trimeter, true, but there are six lines rather than four, and the metre is more jaunty and lively than regular iambic metre: many of the feet are anapests (i.e. The poem has the ring of a ballad that has been passed down through oral tradition (and that was designed to be sung and danced to, accompanied by music), but it doesn’t follow the strict ballad metre (quatrains of alternating iambic tetrameter and trimeter, rhymed abcb). Although ‘Annabel Lee’ is often described as a ballad, this is only half-true. At least until the second issue at least. I'm surprised why this new launch isn't getting the press most of the recent Image launches are getting, but this book is good and worth it to try out. All, except for one who apparently likes him but our hero is just too emo right now. Our hero hasn't quite gotten over his recent breakkup and the it only became more apparent during his own surprise birthday party seeing all his friends hooking up. One can almost feel the loneliness Alex drip from the page. Luna and Vaughn crafts a realistic and emotional story. The reader won't know what Luna's version of this love doll is capable since the first issue ends with Alex activating Ada for the first time, and that is almost enough for me to pony up some electronic currency for issue two. In Japan, they've already started making lifelike dolls for such purposes. The story is about Alex and his robotic love surrogate Ada. Jonathan Luna collaborates with Sarah Vaughn in this new Image Comics series set in a very plausible near futuristic setting where a tech conglomerate (think Google) has embedded itself and its products quite securely into human living. It's kind of weird to see this book not billed as being done by The Luna Brothers. By attempting to name secrets and lies he and his mother spent a lifetime avoiding, Laymon asks himself, his mother, his nation, and us to confront the terrifying possibility that few in this nation actually know how to responsibly love, and even fewer want to live under the weight of actually becoming free. In this powerful and provocative memoir, genre-bending essayist and novelist Kiese Laymon explores what the weight of a lifetime of secrets, lies, and deception does to a black body, a black family, and a nation teetering on the brink of moral collapse.
